The Abia State Government has announced a change in its approach to the upcoming anniversary celebration of the state’s creation. Instead of extravagant award ceremonies and unnecessary expenditures, the government aims to focus on efficient financial management. This shift is part of a broader effort to eliminate wasteful spending and promote prudence.
Officials, including Secretary to the State Government, Professor Kenneth Kalu, and Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, emphasized during a press conference that this year’s celebration marks a departure from past practices. They stressed the importance of making Abia State beneficial for all residents, rather than allowing a select few to benefit from its resources while others suffer.
The theme for this year’s anniversary is “Abia: Hitting the Re-set Button.” The week-long celebration, starting from August 23 and concluding on August 29, will feature various events. These include visits to orphanages and hospitals, religious services, a novelty match between government branches, a sanitation exercise, and an anniversary lecture delivered by former Minister for Education and Good Governance Advocate, Mrs. Oby Ezekwesili.
Officials underlined that this anniversary signifies the beginning of a new era for Abia, one marked by responsible governance and a focus on the welfare of all its citizens. They explained that awarding individuals would contradict the government’s message of change, as it would honor those who contributed to the state’s past struggles.
