The pan-Yoruba organization Afenifere has cautioned the Nigerian government against the World Bank’s recent recommendation to reduce support for social services.
In a statement, Afenifere’s National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi, expressed concern that the World Bank’s advice could lead to increased suffering for Nigerians, as any potential benefits would materialize long after the current administration under President Bola Tinubu has completed its term.
Afenifere pointed out that countries that followed similar prescriptions from the World Bank often faced dire economic situations.
They urged the government to prioritize policies that support local businesses and reduce reliance on imports. While commending Tinubu for efforts to enhance productivity and entrepreneurship, Afenifere highlighted the adverse impacts of rising energy costs, which threaten economic stability and contribute to rising unemployment and insecurity.
The organization called for home-grown strategies to foster innovation and support local economies.
