Agulu Community in Anambra State Unites for Joyous New Yam Festival Celebration, Embracing Culture and Traditions

Agulu Community in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State has celebrated the long awaited new yam festival.

The new yam festival popularly known as iwa ji, Iri ji or ike ji is an annual cultural festival by the igbo people that is held at the end of the rainy season in August and September.

Speaking to Kpakpando Correspondent, The traditional ruler of Agulu, Igwe Dr Innocent Elochukwu Obodoakor ( Ezedinobi Ezeani) said that the celebration serves as means of bringing the people together to display their cherished and rich culture and traditions.

According to Igwe Obodoakor, it is an important event for the people of Agulu because people who stays far and near attend the iwa ji and also try to use the opportunity to brainstorm the way forward of the community. He said that “Iri mgba ” in Agulu People’s dialect is a special event to appreciate God for blessing His people. He advised advised the youths to engage more in farming and also desist from drug abuse especially Mkpulummili.

Also speaking, Chief Sir Paulinus Aniagbaoso, Also known as Isimmili Agulu and Onowu Agulu thanked the Almighty God for His bountiful harvest this year 2023 and for given them the Grace to witness another new yam (Iri ji) celebration.

The event was well attended by dignitaries, including Mr. Peter Obi, who was represented by Hon. Patrick Obi, Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo and was represented by his Deputy, Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim, Senator Victor Umeh, among others.
