Anambra State government has promised to Wade into the crisis bedevilling Umuona Community in Aguata Council Area.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, Mr Ikechukwu Mgbeike Barr Queen Vera Okonkwo made the promise when the Executive members of Umuona Progressive Union as well as some concerned citizens of the community, embarked on a peaceful protest at the Government House, Awka, On Tuesday, 1st February 2022.
Addressing the protesters who were carrying placards with inscriptions such as; Umuona Wants A Caretaker Committee, Mr Okoli, Don’t Change Umuona Constitution Illegally, Igwe Humphrey Ejesieme Deserves Respect”, among others, the representative of the SPAD, Mr Ikechukwu Mgbeike, Appealed for calm and commended them for the peaceful demonstration.
He promised that the state government would look into the matter for lasting peace.
Reading out the Resolutions/ Complaints of the concerned citizens of Umuona Town, the former President-General, Chief Ceasar Chinegbu, applied to the state government to stop Mr Kenneth Okoli from using thugs to harass opponents at the town hall meeting, put a stop to Mr Okoli Unilateral amendment of the Umuona Town Constitution and as well desist from parading himself as the PG of the town as the Matter is still pending at Aguata High court.
On behalf of the traditional ruler and people of Umuona Town, Chief Chinegbu also appealed to the state government to set up Caretaker Committee in Umuona Town among others.
Contributing, the Former youth leader of Umuona Town Mr Chukwuma Ndubuilo, frowned at what he described as self Agradisement and flagrant disrespect and breaking of the laws of the Community by Mr Okoli and thanked the state government for its promise to restore peace and order in the Town.
Mr Ndubuilo expressed confidence that the government’s intervention would help restore respect and dignity for the traditional institution and Umuona town as a whole.
Earlier in a telephone interview, the traditional ruler of Umuona, Igwe Humphrey Ejesieme who has ruled Umuona for Nine years expressed displeasure with the manner, the president general, Mr Ikoli and three others have continued to cause distractions in his peace-loving Community Umuona, Explaining that they had 3 suits filed by Mr Okoli against the king and his community that are pending in the Aguata High court within Mr Okoli one year administration.
Igwe Ejesieme also hinted that the said Mr Okoli in December 2021, disrupted the children party and his Ofala festival respectively and on that basis called on government intervention to install a caretaker committee and as well restore the peace, Umuona town was known for.
Efforts made to get Mr Okoli own version of the story proved abortive as at the time of filing this report
