Anambra Govt. Meets With Tricycle Operators And Shuttle Buses Drivers To Tax Issues

Anambra State Government Officials on Saturday, held a meeting with commercial tricycles operators and shuttle bus drivers, who embarked on strike actions to protest government’s N15,000 monthly Tax

The operators also complained that aside the N15,000 levy, they also pay certain amounts of money to touts.

This made the operators to withdraw their services to the public on Thursday and Friday, in protest to drive home their grievances.

As a result, passengers were seen stranded at various points especially at Awka, the capital city.

Addressing the shuttle bus drivers and commercial tricycle operators at Ekwueme square, Awka, the state Deputy Governor, Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim, assured them that the state government is making frantic efforts to resolve the revenue issue which necessitated the meeting.

“We call on the union to conduct themselves in an orderly manner so that their views will be heard to enable government take decisions that will benefit all, as the state government places the priority of all its citizens in due considerations,” Ibezim said.

Also, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security, Air Vice Marshal Ben Chiobi (Rtd), explained that the meeting was a democratic approach in settling the dispute.

“The resistance was probably from misunderstanding or intentional misinformation from the leadership as the agreement was made initially with proper consultations with the unions.

“The meeting has provided us the ample opportunity to have direct contact with the riders and drivers and we promise that more meetings will be held to resolve the issue.”

Some Keke riders who spoke during the meeting, including Mr. Anthony Ejike and Mr. Ifeanyi, complained that the N15,000 monthly pay by tricycle riders was too much to be paid once and suggested that it be reduced.
