Anambra Govt Promises To Critically Examine The Executive Gazette That Changed Nkerehi To Umuchuwu
Anambra State government has promised to critically look into the Executive Gazette that changed the name of Nkerehi town to Umuchukwu, in Orumba South Council Area of Anambra State.
Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, Mr Collins Nwabunwanne, stated this during a meeting with some stakeholders from the town in his office at the Government House, Awka.
The Commissioner restated the State government’s commitment towards restoring peace and normalcy in all communities in the State.
He promised to look into the crisis emanating from the change of the town’s name from Nkerehi to Umuchukwu, to forestall breakdown of law and order, assuring that Governor Chukwuma Soludo administration will always adhere to laid down rules to achieve desired results.
The Commissioner frowned at some individuals from the town who accused him of taking sides in the crisis, and urged them to disabuse their minds of such insinuations, as he means well for them.
He further informed the Stakeholders that government has processes it follows before Letter of Recognition is presented to any traditional ruler.
In their separate remarks, Igwe Mathias Anyadiegwu, Barrister Basil Igwike and the former President-General of the town, Mr Arinze Igwike among other speakers, explained that Nkerehi people who are the aborigines want the governor to look into the crisis bedeviling the community as well as the legality in changing the name of the town to Umuchukwu so as to restore lasting peace and stability in the town.
They were of the opinion that when the two factions of the community are reconciled, they can freely choose who will be their traditional ruler in accordance with the procedure as contained in the Code of Conduct for election / Selection of Igweship of Nkerehi town of 1977.
They stated that Nkerehi town, like other towns in the state, is provided for in the schedule of the Local Government Laws of Anambra 2000 and gazette of 3rd March, 2008, and that accordingly, they can not alter, amend or change the name of Nkerehi to Umuchukwu.
The Stakeholders also hinted that the State House of Assembly passed a resolution in 2007 handing off the issue of changing the town’s name because it was subjudice and commended the government and Commissioner for wading into the crisis with a view to resolving the matter.
