Over 100 youths in Anambra state under the auspices of National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS), Thursday, used sachet water to chase away the state commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Mr Mike Okoye, who had come to address them on behalf of Governor Willie Obiano.
According to the report, the protesting NANS, who blocked both sides of Aroma area of the Enugu/Onistha expressway with placards of different inscriptions around 11.30am demanded for an end to ASUU strike and school reopening nationwide, end of Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS), police brutality, extrajudicial killings, hike in price of petroleum, electricity and bad governance.
Okoye, tried to address the protesters, saying he was sent by the governor, who according to him, had gone for a virtual meeting after addressing another set of protesters calling for the sack of Mr James Nwafor, former SARS boss appointed as Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the Governor on Security, as well as other issues bordering on SARS.
He said the governor has sacked Mr Nwafor, promised to probe him and also tackle other demands, assuring them that the Governor would consult with the state born Minister for Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, to see how the ASUU strike would be brought to an end.
However, the angry students did not allow him to finish addressing them when they started hauling sachet water at him, insisting that the governor must come to address them face to face as he did to the other group.
As a result, the commissioner and his entourage quickly moved out of the crowd, and two hours later, the Chief of Staff to the governor, Mr Primus Odili, came to address them as well.
Report has it that the protesters equally chased away the Chief of Staff from the venue with sachet water singing “Away! Away! Away! Obiano must talk to us…” thereby forcing him to leave as well.
The leader of the protesters, Comrade Peter Onyenwife, urged his members to remain calm as he was sure the governor would come to address them too.
