Anambra State House of Assembly has passed a resolution urging Governor Willie Obiano to as a matter of urgency direct the Commissioner for Environment as well as all relevant agencies to take immediate action in arresting the erosion menace ravaging Umuabiama village, in Ajali community, Orumba North Local Government Area.
The resolution was sequel to a motion sponsored to that effect by the member representing Orumba North constituency, Honourable Emeka Aforka during plenary.
Reports has it that Section Fourteen of the 1999 constitution as amended asserts that the protection of lives and property is the primary purpose of government which is the basis the legislator sponsored the motion.
Explaining it further, Honourable Aforka expressed sadness that the gully erosion has destroyed buildings and property and as well as rendered many homeless and bankrupt.
He further stated that some buildings are on the verge of caving in if stringent measures are not put in place as soon as possible to checkmate the erosion.
On his part, the Deputy Speaker, Dr. Paschal Agbodike, who presided over the plenary described the motion as very pathetic and urged the Ministry of Works to arrest the erosion menace to avoid casualties.
