Anambra State House of Assembly has passed a bill for a law to amend the Traditional Rulers Law, 2007.
The Executive bill which was passed during plenary, amends the Traditional Rulers’ Law 2007 by removing the bureaucracy in the suspension and dismissal of an erring traditional ruler and creating a schedule for the rules of the meeting of the council.
The Speaker of the House, Honourable Uche Okafor, read out the bill for passage, while the lawmakers supported it through a voice vote.
Commenting on the bill, member representing Awka North Constituency, Honourable John Nwokoye, opined that the bill will help sustain the dignity of the state Royal Fathers.
Also at plenary, the House passed a resolution directing the Anambra State Sports Development Commission to open the Ekwueme Square in Awka for use.
The House also directed its Committee on Youth and Sports Development to embark on oversight visit to the Commission to ascertain why other sporting facilities across the state are still not functional and report back to the House.
The resolution followed a motion sponsored by Honourable Law Ezeudu, representing Dunukofia Constituency in the State Assembly.
Honourable Ezeudu observed that since the hosting of the Police Games by Anambra State, Ekwueme Square has been under lock and key, which could cause the standard swimming pool and other facilities there to deteriorate.
On his part, the member representing Nnewi North Constituency, Honourable
Nonso Okafor, hinted that this has resulted in people using the Ekwueme Square roads for various exercises.
The Deputy Speaker of the House, Honourable Paschal Agbodike, also stressed the need for Sports Development Commission to open up the Square so that the aim of constructing it will not be defeated.
In their contributions, the member representing Njikoka One Constituency, Dr. Timothy Ifedioramma, and his Ogbaru One Constituency counterpart, Honourable Noble Igwe, spoke on the dangers inherent in doing exercise on the road.
