Anambra State Ministry of Environment has bemoaned the activities of those it termed “unscrupulous” government officials, who allegedly encroached and decimated all the five forests reserves in the state.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr Emma Okafor, who disclosed this in Awka, regretted that the unnamed officials, who perpetrated the acts with some persons for personal and commercial purposes, had not only robbed the state forests benefits, but also exposed them to ecological issues due to afforestation.
Mr Okafor disclosed this while inaugurating the state officers of a Non-Governmental Organization, Earth, Environment and Climate Care Ambassadors (EECCA), adding that people no longer plant trees.
He noted that citizens cut down the trees for commercial and domestic purposes and just move on, without replanting.
This Permanent Secretary further observed that the organization has come at the right time that the world is seriously battling to mitigate the negative impacts of climate change.
He assured that the ministry would give the tjem necessary support to excel in their assignment, adding that the state government had also, embarked on tree planting campaigns across the state.
Earlier, the Coordinator of EECCA, Sir Mike Opia, said the vision of the organisation was to ensure a sustainable environment and natural resources as well as socio-economic well-being of the citizens, by reducing significantly the negative impacts of climate change on the economy and humanity.
