ANSDRC To Establish Fund For People With Disabilities
Anambra State Disabilities Rights Commission (ANSDRC) has announced plans to establish Persons With Disabilities Fund as stipulated by section 16 of the state Disabilities Rights Law 2018.
This was disclosed by the Chairman of the Commission, Barr. Chukwuka Ezewuzie, during a Press briefing at Awka, Anambra State capital, on Thursday.
According to Barr. Ezewuzie, the fund establishment was among two important actionable plans adopted during the Commission’s quarterly meeting.
He intimated that a member of the commission Bishop Moses Ezedebeago, was appointed the Chairman of the Fund raising committee to Actualize the project, expressing confidence that it will also attract support from international donors and philanthropists.
ASDRC Chairman informed that the State Government has begun the process of documentation of persons with disabilities at the grassroots level.
He also intimated that in line with the Solution Vision for persons with disabilities, the state government has approved the appointment of Liaison Officers for the 21 local government councils, 179 communities and 326 political wards in the state, with representatives from the various town unions and traditional institutions.
Ezewuzie intimated that the “Umunna” (kindred) initiative of Governor Soludo is capturing data of persons with disabilities starting from kindred, community, local government to state level, adding that the Commission will regularly visit the grassroots to find vulnerable persons with disabilities and see what to do to get them to start school or get gainful employment.
He listed other resolutions by the Commission to include appointment of Liason Officers (CLOs) at the Local government, community and ward levels, as well as collaboration and regular communication with Transition Committee Chairmen, Traditional and Religious leaders, Presidents General and Town Union executives.
Barr. Ezewuzie further revealed that the Commission also adopted ‘One Youth Two Skills, enrollment for youths with disabilities and agricultural revolution, to pull PWDs out of poverty using establishment of Access Market Pavillion, Coorperative Society for PWDs, credit facilities for entrepreneurs as well as trade fair for merchants and skilled persons with disabilities
ANSDRC appreciated one of the Commission’s members, Dr Lady Pat Okeke, wife of Chief G.U Okeke for donating two classrooms and hostel blocks to Special School for the Deaf, Odoakpu, Onitsha.
He also thanked Rule of Law and Anti-corruption program (RULAAC) for sponsoring accessibility audit research of Ministries, Department and Agencies (MDAs) with numerous dividends.
Ezewuzie commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo, for uplifting persons with disabilities, recalling with appreciation that the Commission was established during the administration of Governor Willie Obiano in accordance with Section 3 of the Anambra State Disability Rights Law, 2018, as a one-stop shop for all disability services and related matters enda of uplifting the disability persons in the state.
The Chairman further thanked Governor Soludo for the approval of memoranda to furnish and equip the commission with a state-of-the-art equipment after creating an independent budget line for the commission, adding the commission has programmes to pull persons with disabilities out of poverty through establishment of Access Market Pavilion (AMP) and cooperative society for persons with disabilities, credit facilities for enterrpreneurship with disabilities and trade fair for merchants and skilled persons with disabilities.
