A former Presidents-General of Isuanocha community, Awka-North local government area of Anambra state, Chief Anthony Onyeagolu, was yesterday granted bail by an Awka High Court.
Chief Onyeagolu who is one of the suspects in the murder of the deputy youth leader of the community, Mr. Angus Okoye, father of four, was granted bail by Justice Charles Okaa in the sum of 2 million naira, with a surety who should be a civil servant on grade level 10 or above.
Chief Onyeagolu’s team of lawyers led by Professor Ilochi Okafor (SAN), including Professor Emmanuel Obidimma, had urged Justice Okaa to grant their client bail on the ground that there was no any charge of murder against their client before the Court.
The Senior lawyer had also complained to the Court that the ex-community leader was battling with serious challenges which his continued remand in the Correctional Centre, Awka would aggravate.
A legal officer from the Anambra state Attorney-general’s office, Awka, Mrs N. Onyekwelu had persuaded Justice Okaa to stay delivering ruling on the bail application, arguing that the application was based on “deffective charge” against Chief Onyeagolu.
Mrs Onyekwelu told the Court that AG’s office has filed in the Court, a proper charge against Chief Onyeagolu, and, urged the Court in the interest of justice, stay ruling on the bail application and entertain their case.
Justice Okaa had granted Chief Onyeagolu bail based on two cases brought before the Court by the police against the ex-community leader which the Court noted did not establish any murder case against him.
Justice Okaa, however fixed today to entertain the charges brought before the Court by the Attorney-general’s office against Chief Onyeagolu and others in respect of murder of Mr. Angus Okoye.
