ASWAMA Cautions Anambra Residents Against Indiscriminate Dumping Of Refuse

As the rainy season intensifies, the Managing Director of Anambra State Waste Management Authority (ASWAMA), Mr. Amaechi Akorah, has cautioned residents against indiscriminate dumping of refuse.

Mr Akorah, speaking to journalists in Awka noted that indiscriminate dumping of refuse could cause serious havoc to the environment especially during the rainy season.

He said people should be cautious about their waste disposal which he pointed out, can cause greater harm and damage to the system.

The ASWAMA Managing Director asserted that If waste disposal is not managed with utmost caution, when it rains, it will cause flooding and create problems to lives and property.

He contended that waste management is not only about the government enforcing the environmental laws but about people’s attitude towards waste disposal.

Mr Akorah said if people were not comfortable with retaining waste in their homes, they should also not be comfortable dumping it indiscriminately on the streets, regretting that government is spending huge amount of money to buy  trash containers and vehicles to evacuate and manage wastes, while some residents have refused to obey simple rules on proper waste disposal.

According to him, the goverment has provided disposal points, especially in the densely populated areas in cities to ease disposal.

He hinted that the agency has arrested some people flouted environmental laws on waste management and were handed over to police for prosecution, and fur warned that a waste management disposal team has been put in place to monitor and arrest defaulters.
