Awka, the Anambra State Capital has been named the South East Zonal headquarters of the National Senior Secondary Education Commission, NSSEC, an agency established by the Federal Government in April, 2021, as the regulatory body for the senior secondary education system in the country.
The Executive Secretary of the Commission, Dr Iyela Ajayi disclosed this on Thursday 21st March 2024, during a courtesy visit to the Anambra State Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, who was represented by his Deputy, Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezim.
Dr. Ajayi revealed that before the establishment of the NSSEC, it was only the Senior Secondary education segment of the Nigerian education system that has no regulatory and intervention agency, in spite of the fact that it is the bridge between basic education and tertiary education.
Describing the past two years of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration as two years of landmark, evidential achievements and exemplary leadership, Dr Ajayi rated Anambra State high in educational excellence, saying that the commission decided to make Anambra State the South East Zonal headquarters because of the revolution going on in the education sector of the state which recently led to the recent emergence of the state as state with the lowest percentage of out-of-school children in Nigeria.
Listing prescription and enforcement of the National Minimum Standards for Senior Secondary Education in Nigeria, development of policy guidelines for the operation of senior secondary education programmes in Nigeria, advising of the Federal Government on the funding and development of senior secondary education in Nigeria, as some of the mandates of the commission, Mr Ajayi appealed to Anambra state government to provide temporary office for the commission in Awka and allocate empty land for the construction of the permanent complex of the NSSEC Southeast headquarters.
Responding, Dr. Ibezim thanked the commission for finding Anambra State worthy to host the Southeast zonal headquarters of the commission, assuring that the government of Professor Soludo will give the commission all the necessary support as the administration does not joke with issues concerning education.
He reeled out to the delegates of the NSSEC, some achievements of Soludo’s administration, aimed at revamping the education sector, such as donating of over 2000 laptops to head teachers, recruitment of 5000 teachers, processing of another 3000 teachers, donating Billions to Missions Schools in the state, free-compulsory- primary-secondary school education among other things, insisting that Prof. Soludo will not rest until Anambra’s education becomes cutting edge .
