In another development, Awka South Local Government has cleared the Pedestrian Bridge at the UNIZIK Temporary Site Junction, Awka, of all business activities.
Speaking during the decongestion drive, the Transition Committee Chairman, Awka South Council Area, Mr. Leo Nwuba, who led the decongestion team, said the aim was to clear the bridge and it more convenient for users.
Chief Nwuba noted that Government constructed the Pedestrian Bridge to enable people cross the Express Road safely and reduce carnage on that axis of the road
He regretted that some people converted the bridge into a market, which necessitated the decongestion.
The Awka South Translation Committee Chairman informed that the council had earlier issued notice and series of announcements to discourage the traders from continuing the trade on the bridge which, he noted, turned the bridge into a breeding hub for minor criminal activities.
Mr. Nwuba further notified that security operatives would be stationed at the bridge daily, alongside the task force, to confiscate and arrest anyone found selling on the bridge.
He advised the traders to move to the various markets instead of converting the pedestrian bridge to a mini market.
