Bandits Abduct Passengers, Set Vehicle Ablaze In Zamfara

Bandits have reportedly abducted several passengers and set their vehicle ablaze in an attack at Kwanar Jalab village, Zungeru Ward, Shinkafi Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

The incident occurred on Tuesday morning when the vehicle was conveying 10 passengers from Gusau to Shinkafi.

Eyewitnesses indicate that the bandits ambushed the vehicle around 8 a.m., seizing all the passengers before setting the car ablaze.

A local resident who spoke on the incident, expressed shock, noting that while abductions are common in the area, burning vehicles after kidnappings marks a new and troubling tactic

According to report, the attack followed a warning from notorious bandit leader, Bello Turji, who recently threatened violence if his relatives, allegedly arrested by security forces, were not released. Turji’s threats specifically targeted communities in Zamfara and Sokoto states, raising fears of further violence.

Due to the development, residents have reacted with alarm, with some suspending travel plans due to the heightened risks. “My mother warned me not to travel after hearing about the incident,” said a resident of Shinkafi, who believes the number of abducted individuals could be as high as 10, based on the vehicle’s usual capacity.

To this end, a former Sokoto State Governor, Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa, has called on the federal government to address Turji’s threats decisively.

The former Governor who spoke from his Sokoto residence, Bafarawa, urged authorities to protect vulnerable communities and prevent further attacks.

He emphasized the importance of collective action and support for the government in securing the region.

Meanwhile, the military has reaffirmed its commitment to dismantling terrorist networks in the area.

The Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Buba, described Turji as a “dead man walking,” stating that ongoing military operations have already eliminated several high-profile terrorist leaders. He assured that the military remains steadfast in its efforts to neutralize remaining threats and restore peace to the region.
