The Anambra State government has issued a warning to residents in flood-prone areas to stay alert as the River Niger continues to rise rapidly. The affected areas include Ayamelum, Anambra East, Anambra West, Onitsha South, Awka North, Ihiala, Ogbaru, and Ekwusigo, which are annually impacted by flooding.

The warning follows a report from the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), which indicated that many parts of the country, including Anambra, are at risk of flooding due to rising waters from Niger Republic and Mali, gradually moving towards Nigeria.

With the floodwaters expected to peak between August and September, the state government has urged residents to take necessary precautions. In response, Anambra state government has set up 27 holding camps in upland areas to accommodate those displaced by the impending flood.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and are working with relevant agencies to provide support to affected communities.
