The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele has lauded Nigerians for their efforts to swap the old naira notes before the supposed deadline which has been extended. He said that since the commencement of the Naira Swap program, they have collected about N1.9 trillion , leaving the apex bank with about 900 billion.

Speaking on Sunday with journalists after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at Daura, Katsina state, he said that the President has approved the 10 day extension of the deadline for the Naira Swap from January 31, 2023 to February 10, 2023 to make more for more old notes to be returned to the banks.

He said that the exercise has achieved 75 percent of the N2.7 trillion held outside the banking system as also Nigerians in the rural areas , the villages , the aged and the vulnerable have had the opportunity to swap their old notes.

Emefiele said that the aim of the extension is to give all Nigerians that have Naira legitimately earned and trapped, the opportunity to deposit their legitimately trapped monies for exchange.

He charged all to make use of the opportunity as there would be no extension after this period.
