A day after some traders at the Ochanja market protested against the construction of additional buildings on existing old and weak structures and equally erecting new buildings, a two-storey building collapsed in the market at about 5:45 pm on Saturday. Eyewitnesses said the collapse was a result of the additional structures being done without proper reinforcement. It was also reported that three people died from the incident.
However, in a swift response, the Chairman/ Managing Director of Anambra State Physical Planning board said that from the report he got, the casualty from the collapse was a girl who sustained injuries but there was no record of any death.
He cautioned journalists to always verify news before publication. He also promised to meet with concerned stakeholders, including the traders themselves to look into the matter of the conflict regarding the new structures in the Ochanja Central Market, Onitsha.
