The Chief of Army Staff,(COAS) Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, has rejected calls for self-defence amid recent attacks in Plateau, emphasizing that it leads to anarchy. Despite the outcry over the attacks, he asserted confidence in the Nigerian Army’s ability to defend the country, expressing disapproval of citizens resorting to self-defence.
To address the situation, General Lagbaja announced the deployment of more troops and equipment to Plateau, outlining plans for 2024 to enhance security in the state.
The attacks in Plateau, resulting in over 195 deaths and numerous injuries, have triggered a response from President Bola Tinubu and global entities such as the United Nations, urging the Nigerian authorities to conduct a thorough and independent investigation.
UN rights chief Volker Turk called for accountability and efforts to address the root causes of the violence in order to prevent its recurrence.
The region has faced longstanding challenges, including bandit militias, competition for natural resources, and escalating tensions between herders and farmers.
