The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has refuted allegations by Amnesty International that 10,000 civilians arrested for terrorism-related offenses have died in military detention centers since the Boko Haram insurgency began in 2009.
In a statement signed by Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, the DHQ described the claims as baseless and mischievous.
The military emphasized that its operations are guided by international humanitarian laws and rules of armed conflict. Despite challenges in the North East, troops have adhered strictly to rules of engagement, taking steps to prevent civilian casualties.
The statement clarified that detainees are thoroughly profiled, with suspects either released or handed over to relevant agencies for prosecution. It also highlighted internal accountability mechanisms, including court-martial systems.
DHQ urged Amnesty International to present credible evidence to support its allegations, enabling an investigation into the claims.
