Samuel Chukwueze’s late goal broke the tie as Villarreal stunned Bayern Munich to reach the Champions League semi-finals for the first time in 16 years.
With his side’s second shot on target across both legs, Chukwueze leveled on the break in the 88th minute to give Villarreal the lead on aggregate – and earn them a historic victory against the six-time European champions.
They will face the winner of Liverpool versus Benfica in the last four, a contest Jurgen Klopp’s side currently leads 3-1 on aggregate.
Chelsea’s Champions League defense is over after a pulsating quarter-final against Real Madrid ended in a 5-4 aggregate win for the Spanish giants.
Karim Benzema’s hat-trick in the first leg had put Real Madrid in control of the tie and eventually, it was the Frenchman’s extra-time header in the second that settled it, but in between the Blues threatened to pull off a famous European comeback.
