Citizens have been advised to cultivate, as well as consume Biofortified Crops Enriched With Vitamin A and micronutrients

These include Cassava, maize and orange Fleshed Sweet Potatoes.

Anambra State Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr Nnamdi Onukwwuba, gave the advice at a one-day Processors Training workshop, organised by the State Ministry of Agriculture in collaboration with Harvest Plus Gain.

Commissioner Onukwwuba, represented by the Director, Technical Services, in the Ministry and partner to Harvest Plus and Gain, Mr Emeka Okoli, described Biofortified crops (vitamin A cassava, maize and orange-fleshed sweet potatoes) as liquid gold and remedies/ Immune system builders against numerous health challenges due to their nutritional and health benefits.

He urged participants at the workshop to pay serious attention to the training to be able to make the desired impact in their homes and environment.

The Commissioner further spoke on the need to utilise the knowledge acquired from the training on Commercialization, Processing and Marketing of Biifortified Food Products for livelihood and income generation.

In his speech, the Program Manager for Commercialization of Bio-fortified Food Crops for Harvest Plus, Mr Goodluck Ogu, informed that malnutrition is a key factor that they want to find a way to remedy.

He urged people to eat healthy nutritious food to fight against sickness and diseases arising from eating foods not rich in nutrients.

Mr Ogu also explained that Biofortified crops (Vitamin A Cassava, maize and orange Fleshed Sweet Potatoes) are good staple food crops that could be used to fight poverty and malnutrition for millions of people.

He urged them to pay adequate attention to the training and commended the organizers and state government for championing the cause of Biofortified crops in the state.

A resource person, Mrs Ogechukwu Okoli – ikejiofor, of Esomchi Foods, educated participants on how to bake bread with vitamin A Cassava Flour and that of Orange fleshed sweet potatoes, Chin chin, as well as making juice with orange-fleshed sweet potatoes among others, using Biofortified crop products.

The training featured a question and answer session.
