COREN Blames Onitsha Building Collapse To Substandard Materials, Poor Foundation
Council for Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), Anambra State Council, says substandard materials and poor foundation were responsible for the collapse of a three-story building under construction at the Ochanja Market in the commercial city of Onitsha.
The incident which occurred at about 6pm on Monday, 26th February, 2024, claimed no fewer than seven lives, and injured many other.
Addressing journalists shortly after inspecting the scene of the incident on Tuesday, Anambra State COREN Chairman, Engr. Victor Meju, said that the regulatory body would not relent in its effort to curb the menace of quackery in the state and the nation at large.
He consoled the families of the victims and urged Nigerians embarking on such massive building projects to shun political, ethnic and religious sentiments and consult the council for proper orientation.
The Chairman, Anambra State Physical Planning Board, Barrister Chike Mmaduekwe, who also spoke at the scene of the incident, also observed that such thing would not have happened if proper procedures were followed.
He announced that between Monday evening and Tuesday morning, a total of seven persons were confirmed dead, while 20 others were rescued with various degrees of injuries .
