Nigeria’s West African neighbour, Cote d’Ivoire has detected its first cases of the H5N1 Bird Flu in over 6 years.
The Government made the announcement on Thursday, where the Livestock and Fisheries Minister, Sidi Tiemoko Toure stated that since July 20, high death rates among poultry were spotted in traditional and modern poultry firms in Mondoukou, East of the country’s economic hub Abidjan, adding that laboratory analysis confirmed the highly pathogenic H5N1 avian flu virus.
Subsequently, the government has ordered all poultry in the affected area to be slaughtered. Poultry imports from other infected countries have also been blocked.
The Flu was last recorded in the country in 2015.
A number of West African nations have also reported the H5N1 outbreaks since January.
Bird flu is a viral infection transmitted both by poultry and migrating wild birds.
The H5N1 and H7N9 strain are transmissible to humans.
