Justice Yusuf Halilu granted permission for one of the defendants, Adamu Ibrahim Umaru, to be tried in absentia due to repeated court absences.

A High Court sitting in Maitama, Abuja, has adjourned the trial of 20 former petroleum tanker driver leaders to July 9.

The Federal Government is prosecuting them over a five-count charge, including attempted murder, assault, and breach of peace. They are accused of attacking NUPENG President Williams Akporeha, Secretary-General Olawale Afolabi, and PTD Chairman Augustine Egbon.

Justice Yusuf Halilu granted permission for one of the defendants, Adamu Ibrahim Umaru, to be tried in absentia due to repeated court absences.

Although the defence argued he is in Calabar prison on another case, the court ruled his absence breached bail terms. A petition to the IGP, admitted as evidence, triggered the case.
