- Malami Restates Federal Government’s Determination in Fighting Banditry, Terrorism and Other Criminal Activities
Following an ex parte motion filed by the Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Justice, the Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday, declared bandits as terrorists.
The Director of Public Prosecution, while speaking, told the court that President Muhammadu Buhari, gave approval for their proscription as a terrorist group.
In a ruling delivered by Justice Taiwo Taiwo the court specifically outlawed “Yan Bindiga” and “Yan Ta’adda” bandit groups and other similar groups in any part of Nigeria, also restraining any person or group of persons from participating in activities of such groups.
The Justice further ordered the Federal Government to publish the proscription order in the official gazette and in two national dailies.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, in reaction to the ruling on bandits as terrorist has said the declaration is a demonstration of the determination of the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Federal Government in doing things in accordance with the rule of law.
In a statement by his media aide, Dr. Umar Jibrilu Gwandu, Malami reiterated the Federal Government’s determination to, noting that they will follow international standards in fighting banditry, terrorism, and other criminal activities in the country.
He also added that there will be collaborations with relevant government and security agencies to take full advantage of the declaration and the government will gazette and publish the proscription order.
