
In a statement released by Chilean Army and based on research , 36 people have tested positive to Covid-19 in Antarctica.
This report makes Antarctica the last continent to be free from the virus, marring the global war against Coronavirus.
General Bernardo O’Higgins Riquelme Base reported on Sunday that a research base located on Antarctica ‘s northernmost Trinity Peninsula, stated that 26 army personnel and 10 civilians working as contractors on the base tested positive with Covid-19.
According to report, the outbreak comes after three people tested positive for Covid-19 on a military vessel that had been supplying logistical support to the O’Higgins base between November 27 and December 10.
According to the report, the Chilean Army said that the Sargento Aldea is in preventive quarantine and is being constant monitored with the support from the Health Authority of the Magallanes and Chilean Antarctic Region. They also said that they have an unconditional commitment to safeguard the health of its members.
