The Police Command in the Federal Capital Territory has announced the imposition of a curfew from 8am to 3pm for safe conduct of the area council elections set to hold today (Saturday, 12th of February).
The Commissioner of Police, Babaji Sunday in a Friday notice, expressed that although, the police had earlier relaxed restrictions on Friday, it had received intelligence that some elements were planning to explore the absence of restrictions of movement earlier announced to disrupt the peaceful conduct of the area council elections.
The CP noted that accordingly, the FCT Police has restricted all movement from 8am to 3pm today (Saturday) to enable eligible voters exercise their civic responsibility, adding that only those on essential services would be allowed free movement.
The FCT area council election, which is the only council poll conducted by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), will see 473 candidates from 14 political parties contest at the polls, with 363 of the contestants vying for 62 councillorship positions in the six area councils.
Earlier on Tuesday, the INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, along with stakeholders held an expanded stakeholders’ meeting as part of preparations for the polls.
According to Yakubu, there will be no voting in 593 polling units.
