The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has seized 9,493 kg of pangolin scales, marking one of the largest wildlife crime busts in recent years.
This operation, conducted in collaboration with the Wildlife Justice Commission (WJC), resulted in two arrests in Kano and two in Lagos.
The Kano/Kaduna operation yielded 2,293 kg, while the Lagos operation netted 7.2 tonnes of scales. Since 2021, the NCS has intercepted nearly 20 tonnes of pangolin scales, equating to over 30,000 pangolins lost to illegal trafficking.
The seizures highlight the NCS’s commitment to dismantling criminal networks involved in wildlife trafficking across Africa.
The NCS aims to expand its enforcement operations beyond major cities, focusing on supply routes in northern Nigeria.
This milestone demonstrates Nigeria’s leadership in wildlife conservation and its dedication to combating wildlife crime in collaboration with international partners.
