The Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, has disclosed a significant milestone in data consumption, with Nigerians using a staggering 721,522 terabytes of data in January this year. This marks the highest data consumption in a single month since the Commission began publishing such statistics.

In December 2023, data usage surged to 713,200 terabytes, attributed to increased activities during the festive season. However, January’s figures surpassed this record despite a slight decline in internet users.

The surge in data consumption is largely attributed to the transition of more Nigerians to 4G and 5G connections, offering faster speeds and thereby increasing data usage per user.

According to NCC data, while the majority of connections still rely on 2G networks, subscriptions to 4G and 5G have been steadily rising. In January 2024, 4G subscriptions increased from 31.33% in December 2023 to 31.75%. Additionally, 5G subscriptions saw growth, reaching 1.11% of all connections in Nigeria.
