Devastating floods have hit Borno State in northeast Nigeria, causing widespread destruction and displacing thousands of residents. The floods were triggered by the collapse of the Alau Dam due to heavy rainfall in the region.
The capital city of Maiduguri has been severely affected, with numerous homes, properties, and critical infrastructure damaged. Hundreds of families have lost their homes, forcing them to seek shelter in safer areas.
The situation has been exacerbated by the escape of wild animals from a local zoo, with crocodiles and snakes reportedly spotted in flooded communities. Authorities have urged residents to exercise caution and evacuate flood-prone regions.
In response, President Bola Tinubu has expressed his condolences to the affected families and assured them of the federal government’s support. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) is collaborating with the Borno State government to provide urgent relief and assistance to the victims.
The floods come at a time when Borno State is already grappling with a 15-year insurgency by the Boko Haram jihadist group. The disaster has further worsened the challenges faced by the people of Borno, who are now in dire need of humanitarian aid and support to rebuild their lives.
