Every 24 Seconds A Life Is Cut Short Due To Road Traffic Crash In Nigeria -UN
The Katsina State Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Sector Commander, Ali Tanimu, has observed that Nigeria has continued to record crashes on roads due to failure of motorists to imbibe acceptable driving culture.
Tanimu made the observation in his address to commemorate the 2022 African Road Safety/World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Crash Victims,” in Katsina.
The World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims (WDR) is observed on third Sunday of November every year, adopted since 2009 in pursuant to United Nations General Assembly resolutionu 60/5
According to Ali, “The day has become an important tool in globalu effort to reduce road casualties.
“It offers opportunity for drawing attention to the scale of emotion and economic devastation caused by road crashes.
“Global UN statistics projects that every 24 seconds a life is cut short because of a road traffic crash Nigeria being in the disadvantaged category of worst hit countries.
“It is also worthy to state that the support of the Federal Government have been tremendous towards helping the FRSC management align with global trends and innovations on road traffic management.
“The giant strides have revealed solution and strategies but all these become a mirage without the complimentary input of all, especially the users of the roads.
“Lack of this cooperation makes it increasingly difficult to place the country among nations that boast of zero deaths on the roads.
“I urge all to remember the focus of the theme which entails the adoption of good and acceptable driving culture amongst road users in order to check avoidable deaths, depletion of human and material resource, he said.
Ali further charged roadtheir users and stakeholders to ensure safer roads with full commitment towards making the roads safe for everyone.
The week-long event will continue with rallies, hospital visitations, among other activities.
