Former leaders of Nigeria, Kenya, and Ethiopia have been appointed as facilitators of the Democratic Republic of Congo peace process. The East African Community (EAC) and Southern African Development Community (SADC) announced the appointment on Monday as fighting escalates in eastern DRC.
Ex-Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, ex-Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, and ex-Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn will oversee ceasefire efforts, humanitarian aid, and the securitization of Goma’s airport.
The two regional blocs, which merged separate peace efforts from Luanda and Nairobi, will hold a ministerial meeting on Friday to finalize ceasefire details.
