Farmers In Kaduna Pay Bandits N400m In Three Years To Prevent Attack In Their Farms

A community leader in Kaduna state, Zubairu Abdulra’uf, said farmers in Birnin-Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State have paid about 400 million Naira to bandits in the last three years to prevent the bandits from attacking them.

Abdulra’uf from the emirate council, disclosed this in a media chat, complained of persistent attacks by the bandits which have seriously affected economic activities in the area.

He also revealed that the attacks prevent people from travelling to the area, informing that the whole of Birnin-Gwari Local Government has paid between N300 and N400m to bandits, to enable people go to their farms.

Abdulra’uf further hinted that the monies were paid to the bandits in three stages, pre-season, mid-season and during harvest, before the farmers can access their farms.

The community leader said that in addition to the money, a ratio of two to ten bags of produce is also given to the bandits.

He lamented that this is what the people of Birnin-Gwari have been grappling with in the last three years.

He, however, cautioned that when the people get frustrated, they will look for alternative ways of protecting themselves as government has failed in its job.
