In an urgent response to the Mpox outbreak, the Nigerian federal government has instructed states to establish emergency preparedness teams with support from the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).
The confirmed cases have reached 40 out of 830 suspected cases.
Dr. Jide Idris, NCDC Director General, announced that they are enhancing laboratory capabilities and targeting high-risk states to improve case detection and reduce transmission. He emphasized the need for public awareness to minimize contact with infected individuals and animals.
Dr. Walter Mulombo from the WHO highlighted the global vaccine shortage and stressed the importance of expanding Nigeria’s laboratory network. He urged vigilance, noting that Nigeria, while at moderate risk, remains vulnerable until the global situation improves.
