Anambra State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, says it is engaging heavy-duty truck unions in the State over the recent road crashes involving heavy-duty vehicles.
The State Sector Commander, Adeoye Irerewuyi, disclosed this at the FRSC Command Headquarters in Awka.
He said the corps is worried about incessant road accidents involving heavy-duty trucks, pointing out that measures are being stepped up to check the ugly trend.
Commander Irerewuyi said in a recent meeting with Petroleum Tanker Drivers’ Union at Onitsha, members of the union listed ageing vehicles, brake failure and congested highways as major causes of road crashes.
He pointed out that this brought to the fore, the need for regular maintenance of their vehicles as one of the solutions to the problem.
On the unusual delays in hauling heavy-duty vehicles that break down off the roads, the State FRSC Sector Commander posited that vehicle owners are largely culpable, while logistics challenges could also be blamed.
Corps Commander Irerewuyi further hinted that they are also looking into cases of unlicensed and under-aged heavy-duty vehicle drivers.
He thanked Governor Willie Obiano’s sustained support to FRSC in Anambra State, which he noted, helps his office achieve set targets.
