The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Anambra State Command, says it has mapped out major areas of focus for the New Year.
The Sector Commander, CC Adeoye Irelewuyi, in a chat with journalists in Awka, on Tuesday, 25th Jan 2022, said the main areas of focus are:
- Enforcement on Speed/installation of Speed limit devices
- Underaged driving of articulated vehicles.
- Ensure vehicles operate within minimum safety standard.
- Use of phone while driving (UPD)
- Driving under the influence of acholol (DUI) and
- Route Violations (one way driving) among others.
He informed that the Command came up with these as a result of the causes of Road traffic Crashes that occurred within the Yelutide season.
CC Irelewuyi also disclosed that the Command recorded 23 deaths from 33 road traffic crashes in the state between Dec. 17, 2021, and Jan. 15, 2022.
The Sector Commander, also revealed that 72 persons sustained varying degrees of injury from the road crashes recorded.
Corps Commander Irelewuyi hinted that within the period under review, 473 persons were arrested for various offences, adding that all of them were booked while some have been prosecuted.
He attributed the crashes to speed limit violations.
“On Dec. 17, 2021, we commenced ‘Operation Zero Crash Special Patrol’, which ended on Jan. 15. This is part of strategies targeted at minimising road traffic crashes during the yuletide.
“The number of death increased compared to previous years. While we recorded 23 deaths within the period, seven deaths were recorded in 2020, ” he said.
The Sector Commander said the state recorded a larger percentage of free traffic flow all through the period, especially on the Niger bridge.
He said, “We were able to achieve free flow of traffic because there was a collaboration with various security agencies as well as the governments of Anambra and Delta states.
“The Niger bridge traffic was flowing because we kept the bridge open. We had four tow trucks, two on both sides, which assisted in removing every obstruction as quickly as possible.
“The command also resolved that it’s Fucus for the year 2022 is on Speed reduction and reduction in Fatalities on Crashes” this which will be achieved through enforcement and aggressive public enlightenment via different means in the State.
CC Irelewuyi advised motorists against speeding, stressing the need for motorists to be cautious while on the road to ensure they arrive at their destinations safely.
