Human rights lawyer Femi Falana, SAN, has stated his belief that Nigeria has the resources to provide free education at all levels for its citizens. He made this statement during a public program in Abuja, organized by the Revolutionary Socialist Movement and the Save Public Education Campaign.
Falana emphasized that free education and other social amenities are possible if resources are democratically managed and controlled.
The event’s topic was “Nigeria at 63: Any hope for the working masses under Bola Ahmed Tinubu Government,” with a subtopic on the public education crisis and possible solutions.
Falana called for better monitoring of resources available to Nigerian universities and the fair distribution of revenue to state and local governments. He criticized the government for providing substantial funds to National Assembly members for various purposes while neglecting the education sector.
Falana also pointed out that the Nigerian constitution guarantees free education at all levels and urged students to resist fee increases in universities. Other speakers at the event highlighted issues like police brutality, arbitrary arrests of youths, and the impact of rising fees on students from less privileged backgrounds.
Some participants expressed doubts about finding solutions to Nigeria’s problems under the leadership of Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
