The wife of the President, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has blamed social media, Nollywood, and some religious institutions for promoting a get-rich-quick mentality that fuels human trafficking in Nigeria.
Speaking in Abuja when the Director-General of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Binta Bello, led top officials to her office, the First Lady called for a cultural shift towards hard work and patience. She also pledged to work with governors’ wives to boost awareness against trafficking.
The visit follows NAPTIP’s recent rescue of 19 pregnant girls from a baby factory in Abuja. The agency’s Director-General noted that human trafficking is the second-largest transnational crime after drug trafficking and called for more support to combat the menace.
Meanwhile, the First Lady also met with the National Council for Women Societies, urging them to take advantage of the Renewed Hope Initiative to support their members.
