Former Governor of Akwa Ibom state, Godswill Akpabio has become the Senate President of the 10th National Assembly.
In an election that was publicly televised, Akpabio polled 63 votes against his rival Abdulaziz Yari who got 46 votes.
Speaking after the swearing in on Tuesday, he thanked God for the golden opportunity given to him, expressing his overwhelming sense of gratitude and responsibility as the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
He pledged to discharge the responsibilities of the office with utmost dedication, integrity and fairness.
Recalling the enormous responsibilities that the position calls for, he said there will be cooperation among the Senators for a common goal .
He also stated that they will strengthen the legislative space in continuation of the laudable efforts made by the 9th Senate , such as Gender matters with specific affirmative provisions to guarantee women’s inclusivity, issues relating to persons with special needs and equality, engaging the youths in terms of protection of intellectual innovations and property.
He also extended his hand of fellowship to all and said the senate will go forward with the task set before them as a collective body, which is the promulgation of laws and enactments for the well-being and security of the country and as a check on the executive arm of the government in their oversight functions .
