Fresh round of the Ethiopian dam talks between Sudan, Ethiopia and Egypt resumed on Sunday with hopes of getting a solution to the water crisis that has to rocked the mega dam project in the past few years.
Previous negotiations between the three countries have been deadlocked for several months as the latest talks which were held by videoconference in early November yielded no positive result.
South African president who also acts as Head of the African Union will spearhead the meeting.
According to a geographical report, the Blue Nile which flows some 6,000 kilometers, is a vital source of water and electricity for about a dozen East African countries.
The dam is causing tensions especially with Egypt with more than a 100 million people with 97% dependency of river Nile for its water supply amidst fears that it will reduce it’s agricultural production.
With regards to Sudan and the deadly slodds experienced last summer, there are are hopes that the dam will help regulate the flow of the river while also warning that millions of lives would be at great risk if no agreement is reached.
Presently, the dam is at the center of Ethiopia’s bid to become Africa’s biggest power exporter.
