The ongoing 10-day National Volleyball Referee and Coaching Course in Anambra State has entered its second day, marking a significant stride in the state’s sports development agenda. This program, held at the Archbishop A.K. Obieduna Retreat Center in Nodu Okpuno, Awka, is a groundbreaking initiative—the first of its kind not only in Anambra State but also in the entire South East region.
The course, which is being conducted in collaboration with the Anambra State Volleyball Association and the Nigeria Volleyball Referees Association, aims to produce top-tier referees and coaches in both beach and traditional volleyball. With the participation of over 25 attendees from across the country, including states as far as Maiduguri and Gombe, the training showcases Anambra’s leadership in advancing sports within the region.
Under the leadership of Hon. Patrick Estate Onyedum, Chairman of the Anambra State Sports Development Commission, this initiative aligns with the state’s mission to foster sports excellence. Onyedum emphasized the commitment of Governor Chukwuma Soludo, CFR, who approved and funded this training as part of his broader strategy to enhance sports across the state. The governor’s support reflects a strong dedication to nurturing talent in various sports disciplines, ensuring that Anambra becomes a central hub for sporting activities.
Chief Jerry Onyemachi, a national referee and coordinator of volleyball for the South East, lauded the program, describing it as one of the best he has seen in his career. He urged other southeastern states to emulate Anambra’s efforts by organizing similar courses, particularly highlighting the underrepresentation of states like Abia, Imo, and Ebonyi in the current training.
International referee Mohammed Mohammed, who is overseeing the training, praised the initiative and stressed the importance of consistent investment in sports, pointing out that northern states have reaped significant benefits from such sustained efforts. He urged southeastern states to capitalize on this opportunity to boost their sports profile.
As the training progresses, it is clear that Governor Soludo’s administration is not only focusing on football but is also committed to revitalizing other sports, positioning Anambra as a beacon of sporting excellence in Nigeria. This course sets a strong foundation for future national and international success in volleyball, further cementing Anambra’s status as a leader in sports development.
The Anambra State Sports Commission expressed its gratitude to Governor Soludo for his unwavering support, which has been instrumental in making this historic training possible. The course represents a significant milestone in the state’s efforts to develop sports infrastructure and talent, ensuring a brighter future for volleyball and other sports in Anambra and beyond.
