Human rights lawyer Femi Falana has criticised Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu, asserting that the minister has failed Nigerians over the electricity tariff increase.
Femi Falana has voiced dissatisfaction with the Federal Government, particularly Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu, regarding the recent electricity tariff hike. Falana alleged that the move is a result of pressure from international financial bodies such as the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.
Speaking on a Channels TV show, Falana highlighted legal inconsistencies surrounding the tariff increase, citing the failure to conduct public hearings as required by law.
He expressed concern over what he perceives as impunity on the part of the government and the Electricity Regulatory Commission, emphasizing the need for adherence to the rule of law.
Falana accused the government of prioritizing directives from international financial institutions over the welfare of its citizens, describing the situation as implementing neoliberal policies dictated by external bodies.
Despite Minister Adelabu’s explanation that only Band A customers, receiving about 20 hours of electricity daily, would be affected by the tariff increase, Falana insists that the justification is insufficient and discriminatory.
