In response to the allegations made by Niger Delta elder, Chief Edwin Clark, that former President Olusegun Obasanjo displayed hatred against the people of the oil-producing states in Nigeria by saying that God has freely placed resources in the soil and indirectly creating chaos and anarchy as anybody in any part of the world can enter into any land to undertake any activity, Former president Olusegun Obasanjo has clarified his stand, saying he was wrongly accused.
He stated that his opinions raised at at forum organised by the Global Peace Foundation and Vision Africa in Abuja were misinterpreted.
That not withstanding, Obansanjo stated that oil found in the Niger Delta region belonged to Nigeria constitutionally as the constitiuion did not confer ownership of oil and other mineral resources on any of the regions.
He said that as minerals in other parts of the country belong to the country, Niger Delta’s oil belongs to the Nigerian federation.
In the open letter to Clark on December 28, 2021, he said that he has never shown anger or distraught with any Nigerian nor with any part or region of Nigeria but instead will rather pick points on leadership or policies.
Obasanjo reiteretared that there is no part of Nigeria whose interest is not dear to his heart.
