Honorable Justice Nkemdilim Amelia Izuakor was at the just concluded International Federation of Women Lawyers(FIDA)week 2020 honoured with a platinium Award for Human and Gender Rights Development.
Izuakor a retired United Nations Dispute Tribunal President and the longest serving West African Judge at the United Nations Tribunal was recognized for her unending efforts towards a gender sensitive society.
Justice Izuako, the first chairperson of FIDA Anambra who’s leadership did not only pioneer the inaugration of FIDA and its Legal Clinic in the State but also attracted several other projects such as a Family Law Centre, a USAID sponsored project which provided support for vulnerable and children, The Macarthur Fund for Leadership Development through which she advocated to the Anambra State House of Assembly to enact Women friendly laws, also human Rights trainings for Police Officers which preceeded the setting up of Family Law Desks at Police Stations to recieve and act on domestic violence among numerous other achievements which has set the Pace for the success of FIDA in the State.
Justice Nkem Izuakor a former Executive Secretary of the Judicial Service Commission while serving as a high court Judge in the State introduced and taught the course Women and Minority Rights Law at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University on pro bono after numerous international trainings on gender sensitivity.
A vibrant member of the civil society in nigeria, an advocate for women and human rights is the Founder of the africa centre for ethical standards (Aces) a non-governmental organisation through which she fights the scourge of human rights abuse and disenfranchisement in our society.
Recieving the Award, justice Izuako thanked FIDA Anambra for recognizing her pain staking Contributions to the establishment of FIDA in the state and praised the executives for their doggedness in championing the course of FIDA in Anambra.
She also commended the Organizing Committee of the FIDA week 2020 in making sure the event coincided with this year’s United Nations Women 16 Days of Activism against Gender Based Violence while calling on all and sundry to eschew violence against Women as they are the true essence of Creation which should be afforded an enabling Society to exercise their Fundamental Rights.
