Iran has rejected a call from Britain, France, and Germany to refrain from any retaliatory actions that could escalate regional tensions, labeling the request as excessive.
This comes after the European leaders urged Iran and its allies not to retaliate for the recent killing of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, an act for which Iran blames Israel.
The European leaders also expressed support for ongoing mediation efforts by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States to end the Israel-Hamas conflict, with talks expected to resume on Thursday. They called for the immediate return of hostages held by Hamas and the unrestricted delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza.
The conflict, ongoing for over 10 months, has resulted in nearly 40,000 Palestinian deaths in Gaza, according to the local Health Ministry. Meanwhile, U.S. President Joe Biden acknowledged the difficulty of achieving a ceasefire but reaffirmed his commitment to ending the hostilities.
