Russian President Vladimir Putin has urged restraint amidst escalating tensions between Israel and Iran following Iran’s unprecedented drone and missile attack over the weekend.
In a phone call with Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, Putin emphasized the need for all sides to avoid actions that could lead to further confrontation in the Middle East, particularly in light of Iran’s retaliatory measures after an Israeli attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus earlier this month.
Putin underscored the importance of addressing the root cause of instability in the region, pointing to the unresolved Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He expressed hope that all parties would exercise reasonable restraint to prevent a new round of confrontation with catastrophic consequences for the entire region.
Raisi, in turn, thanked Russia for its support and highlighted Iran’s actions as forced and limited in nature. He reiterated Tehran’s desire to avoid further escalation of tensions while reaffirming Iran’s readiness to respond to any actions against its interests.
The leaders also reaffirmed their commitment to promoting an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and creating conditions for a diplomatic resolution to the crisis.
