Its been days of sombre in the Zulu Kingdom of South Africa as the Zulu nation has been in mourning since Friday the 12th of March when it was announced that King Goodwill Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu passed on. The great Ingonyama took his last breath at Durban’s Inkosi Albert Luthuli Hospital, where he had been receiving treatment for a month. It had been initially reported that he had issues with his glucose levels.
COVID-19 has no discrimination as it takes both young and old, rich and poor, black and white. The virus has now claimed the life of King Zwelithini who at 72 years old put up a brave fight against this virus.
The Royal house in to their statement confirmed he passed away from COVID – 19 related complications in the early hours of Friday morning.
The news of his death was confirmed by IFP President emeritus Mangosuthu Buthelezi in his capacity as traditional AmaZulu Prime Minister and the King’s uncle.
The Zulu nation started to mourn immediately after hearing that the King had passed. Everything came to a standstill in the South African province of KwaZulu Natal. KZN Premier Sihle Zikalala called off all government business on Friday and all weekend activities, as a mark of respect to King Goodwill. Zikalala also said the province had declared a week of mourning during which all government functions would be canceled. A day of prayer would be held on the 18th of March and a team would coordinate a series of events ahead of the King’s funeral.
The King’s body will no longer lie in State due to COVID -19 protocols reports stated, as the public has been urged not to visit any of the Zulu Royal Palaces in KwaZulu Natal due to risk associated with the pandemic.
Condolences have been pouring in from across the globe, while some South African political party leaders have made their way to the Palace to pay their last respects.
