The Organised Labour, represented by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), has once again turned down a new minimum wage proposal from the Federal Government. The latest offer of ₦60,000 was rejected, with the Organised Labour maintaining their stance at ₦494,000, shifting from their previous position of ₦497,000.
Discussions between the government, the Organised Private Sector (OPS), and the labour unions have been deadlocked, as no agreement was reached during the recent meeting. The Tripartite Committee is yet to finalize a new minimum wage, just days before the May 31 deadline set by the labour unions.
The labour unions argue that the current minimum wage of ₦30,000 is insufficient to meet the needs of Nigerian workers, emphasizing the necessity for a substantial increase to improve workers’ economic well-being. NLC President Joe Ajaero criticized the proposed wage as unsubstantial, highlighting the economic challenges faced by workers in the country.
The negotiations continue as the parties work towards a resolution to address the economic demands of Nigerian workers and ensure fair compensation in line with contemporary economic realities.
